By processing waste created by the timber industry we are manufacturing firewood from a raw material which would otherwise go into landfill or be burned for no purpose. Our process harnesses heat energy so that you the user gain the maximum benefit with the least harm to the environment.
How does it work?
We collect the sawmill waste and dry it to a moisture level of approx 10%. The material is then mechanically compressed an extruded through a die in a continuous log. During this compression heat is generated (up to 220 C) and the lignins in the wood literally melt. As they cool in the extruded log they act as a natural binder which holds our Ekologs together.
Are any glues used?
There are no additives in our process. Ekologs are therefore a perfect BBQ Fuel or Smoker Fuel.
How long will Ekologs burn for?
This is difficult to answer. This is due to the human factor which we cannot control. If a fire is run inefficiently all fuels will in turn burn at different rates - either too quickly or smolder too slowly.
If a fire is burned correctly Ekologs will burn for longer that an equivalent sized pieces of traditional firewood. In some instances we have noted burn times of up to 20% longer but this is dependent on the quality of the wood we are comparing Ekologs with.
How hot do they burn?
As we have removed most of the moisture in Ekologs there is less energy used in burning off the moisture content in traditional firewood. Our briquettes are between 5 & 10% moisture where firewood from a wood yard must be less than 20% Moisture for use in a current season.
As less heat energy is used in boiling off the water retained in the fuel more heat is created and at a quicker rate.
